TYPES OF PRESCRIPTION

 TYPES OF PRESCRIPTION 

 Prescriptions can be classified as  

a) Compounded prescription  

b) Non compounded prescription 

a). Compounded prescription- 

 Also known as extemporaneous prescription. 

 It is an order that requires mixing of one or more ingredients (active medicaments). 

 It contains several ingredients which are divided into the following parts: 

(a) Base: The active medicaments (Produce the therapeutic effect). 

(b) Additives- 

1) It enhances the action of the drug. 

2) It makes the preparation more elegant (attractive) and palatable. 

(c) Vehicle: It is the main carrier of the drug.  

E.g. -In liquid preparations                           solvent (water) used as vehicle. 

 Now a day‟s compounding is omitted from prescription. 

E.g.   

Sodium bicarbonate 3 g 

Simple Syrup  6 ml

Purified Water (q.s.) 100ml 

b). Non compounded prescription    

 Does not require compounding of pharmaceutical product.  

 Pre compounded drugs supplied by a pharmaceutical company by its official or proprietary name.

British Pharmacopeia

  British Pharmacopeia *First edition of BP was published in 1864. *It consists of two sections: *Part I: Materia Medica and *Part II: Preparation and compounding. *Second edition of BP was published in 1867. *Third edition of BP was published in 1884. *Fourth edition of BP was published in 1898. *Next edition of BP was published in 1914. *Next edition of BP was published in 1953. *In this edition titles of drugs and preparations were in English instead of Latin and metric system. *It has been published annually. *In BP 2007 monographs has been introduced for material specifically used in *preparation of Traditional chinese medicines. *BP 2008 contains approximately 3100 monographs for substances, preparations and articles used in practice. *It has been made effective from 1st January 2008. *BP 2007, 2008, 2009 were given in six volumes i.e. volume I to volume VI. *Volume I and II contains medicinal substances.
